I see color as a visual expression of joy. Color is what drew me to painting, and what continues to fascinate me. I started at age 7 with my first set of oils, the first step in an artistic journey in which color has been my greatest teacher. While studying at the California College of the Arts (formerly CCAC), I discovered the work of Bay Area artists such as Wayne Thiebaud, David Park, and Paul Wonner. Their use of color and the way they manipulated paint was a revelation.

Throughout my career I have experimented with many mediums, some of which are considered quite unusual in the art world. My use of pastels from 1980 to 2000 was a way for me to blend color, providing a depth and iridescence that only the shimmering grains of pastel can describe. As I kept experimenting I also employed acrylics and mastered the techniques of color mixing.

I have always appreciated life science and geology, and often draw influence from patterns found in ancient animals, nature, and microscopic life forms. I often create vast fields of vibrant, vibrating color juxtapositions from these simple subjects, blending art and biology.
